Local elections

Triennial local elections

Elections of members of local authorities are held once every three years, on the second Saturday in October. The next elections will be held on 11 October 2025. By-elections are held when a vacancy occurs.

The triennial elections of regional councils, city and district councils, community boards and local boards are held at the same time as elections for licensing trusts. Westland District Council’s Election Statistics can be found here.

Key dates - 2025 elections

Friday 4 July 2025: Candidate nominations open, roll opens for public inspection.
Friday 1 August 2025: Candidate nominations close at 12 noon, roll closes.
Tuesday 9 September 2025: Voting documents posted out, voting opens.
Saturday 11 October 2025:  Voting closes at 12 noon.
Saturday 11 October 2025: Preliminary results available.
Thursday 16 – Sunday 19 October 2025: Declaration of final results.

2022 election results

Mayor: Helen Lash was declared elected.

Northern Ward: Reilly Burden, Ian Hustwick and Jane Neale are declared elected.

Hokitika Ward: Donna Baird, Paul (Tanka) Davidson and Steven Gillet are declared elected.

Southern Ward: Ashley Cassin and Brian Manera are declared elected.

West Coast Regional Council – Westland Regional Constituency: Andy Campbell and Peter Haddock are declared elected.

Development West Coast – Westland Constituency: Rebecca Pearson is declared elected.
