Places to visit

Westland District is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

The District includes the former Hokitika Borough and Westland County. The geographical extent of the District is shown on the map below.

There are many small, interesting towns throughout the District. Westland residents have a proud history of goldmining and commerce, while the modern industries focus on farming and promoting the unique natural beauty of the area.  Te Wähipounamu – South West New Zealand is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Visitors can enjoy stepping onto glaciers, tramping and hunting in the bush, water-sports on the rivers, lakes and lagoons, and the ever-popular whitebaiting (during the season).
