Mayor's Update - March 2025

Westland Mayor’s Update: Progress, Events, and Future Plans

The past couple of weeks have been busy across the district, with major infrastructure announcements, progress on key projects, and events that continue to highlight the best of Westland.

A significant milestone for the region is the confirmation of $16.4 million in funding for the Hokitika Airport runway upgrade through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) and Development West Coast (DWC). This investment is the result of months of collaboration and will ensure the airport remains a safe and reliable gateway for residents, businesses, and visitors. The upgrade is critical for maintaining essential connectivity and supporting economic growth in the region.

Westland recently hosted thousands of visitors for the Wildfoods Festival, a much-anticipated event that not only brings vibrancy to Hokitika but reinforces the vital role tourism plays in supporting our local economy. Events like this provide a much-needed boost to businesses across hospitality, retail, and accommodation, and it was fantastic to see the district thriving with visitors enjoying all that the West Coast has to offer.
In infrastructure developments, I recently visited the proposed Waitaha Hydro Scheme site, a project with the potential to enhance energy resilience for the region. Secure and sustainable power infrastructure is critical to ensuring a reliable electricity supply for households, businesses, and industry.

Another important milestone is the upcoming reopening of the second Hokitika Gorge Bridge. This replacement bridge will restore the full circuit for visitors, allowing them to complete the loop and experience the iconic views. The Hokitika Gorge is one of our most visited natural attractions, and maintaining its accessibility enhances the visitor experience while supporting local tourism operators and businesses.
Looking ahead, I am continuing discussions with the Regional Council on the Hokitika stopbank extension, a key priority for flood protection and resilience. At the same time, we are working with NZTA and the Government to advance solutions for Knights Point, a critical transport link affecting residents, businesses, and tourism operators. Additionally, work is ongoing with the Government and the community on the Franz Josef Masterplan, which remains a priority for the region’s long-term development.

The West Coast Wilderness Trail continues to be a major regional asset, and I am pleased to be working alongside the Trust and the working group to ensure it remains well-supported. More than just a recreational attraction, the trail delivers economic benefits by drawing visitors, creating business opportunities, and reinforcing the West Coast as a premier cycling destination.

Council is also reviewing activities that receive funding from rates as an operating subsidy, exploring ways to reduce the burden on ratepayers while ensuring essential services remain accessible. This is part of a broader effort to manage costs effectively and ensure funding is directed to where it delivers the greatest community benefit.

As we head into the Long Term Plan process, I will be travelling across the district to meet with residents, discuss priorities, and gather feedback. This is a valuable opportunity for the community to shape the future of Westland, and I encourage everyone to get involved.

There is a lot happening across the district. While challenges remain, we also have significant opportunities ahead. With the right investment and strategic planning, we can continue to build a strong, resilient, and thriving Westland.
