As part of Council’s desire to increase the resilience of our water supplies, burst control valves have been fitted to many of our water treatment plants. The latest one installed was at the Blue Spur water treatment plant in the early hours of Thursday 15 June. The valve is located close to the reservoirs and designed to automatically shut if a high outlet flow is registered for a predetermined timeframe.
The valve will be commissioned later this month by the supplier so in the interim we are operating in bypass mode, which maintains water supply.
Burst valves are sometimes referred to as seismic valves as major pipeline ruptures can occur during earthquakes. The valves will shut to prevent the reservoirs draining.
Another of Council's resilience projects is the installation of standby generators at all water treatment plants, which has been completed.
