Safer Westland

The Westland Safe Community Coalition Safer Westland meets on the last Friday of every second month from 9am - 11.30am in various venues.

Its goal is to strengthen community networks and community resilience and to help promote Westland District as a safe and welcome community and so attract investment and new residents. 

Safer Westland is keen to improve community safety and well-being, to operate a range of community safety and well-being programmes based on proven or promising strategies.

The Safer Westland Group respond to available safety data for Westland, assess priorities to promote projects and initiatives. Safer Westland participate in local, national and international safe community campaigns and responses.

Safer Westland Governance Group

The current Chair is Councillor Jane Neale who chairs both the Governance Group and the Safer Westland coalition group meetings.

The Safer Westland Governance Group has representatives from: Council, NZ Fire Service, NZ Police, Department of internal Affairs, Accident Compensation Corporation, Community and Public health, WestREAP, West Coast Road Safety, and Poutini Waiora.

All local groups are welcome to be involved in Safer Westland and to send a representative to the Safer Westland Community Coalition meetings.

Current projects in which the Coalition is actively involved in or supports include:

  1. Taxi Chit Scheme for seniors who have voluntarily given up driving
  2. Youth - CACTUS
  3. Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Programme
  4. Hokitika Community Patrol
  5. Clued up Kids Safety Programme
  6. Community Champions
  7. DriveWEST – Learner Licence Programme
