Media Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thanks to local artist Bless Groome and the Chorus Cabinet Artwork programme, the Chorus Cabinet at 66 Tudor Street, Hokitika has been creatively reimagined.
“This is a lovely project for the community,” says Community Development Advisor, Sarah Brown. “We are grateful to Chorus for funding the programme and allowing local artists to showcase their talent. This year Bless made the only submission with “Blue Caps”, and it is a stunning piece of work. Next year we hope that Chorus may support make-overs for two cabinets and that there will be more entries following Bless’ example.”
Bless has painted the cabinet during the second week of the school holidays. Her project is entitled “Blue Caps” and was described in her entry as, “A mandala artwork, originally designed digitally. Represents the re-growth and hope for the environment using the native New Zealand fungi ‘Entoloma hochstetteri’ it also represents the coming of colour in our community. People branching out and showing their true colours, whether that be LGBT, beliefs or what have you everyone is becoming more aware and welcoming to this strange new growth.”
“I will be painting further onto the sides in the future,” advises Bless. “If I can’t get that finished this weekend that is. So the main artwork has been finished, just some last minute details to be made.”
Chorus Community Relations manager Jo Seddon says, “We know that these murals not only enhance our streetscapes and are well loved by our community, but also help in the ongoing battle with graffiti vandalism.
“We know there are some really talented people living in Westland District and this is a great way for them to showcase their skills and imaginations.
“I really enjoy seeing murals come to life around the country and am looking forward to building up our initiative in Westland.”
