With Guy Fawkes just around the corner it’s important to think of your pets and other animals. While we can’t prevent fireworks being let off, there are things that owners can do to help keep their pets and animals safe.
For pets at home:
- Bring pets inside where possible and secure your home so they can’t escape. Find out when any firework events are being held and stay home with your pets.
- Some pets don’t react to fireworks, and others are very scared. If your pet is scared you can:
- Have a safe place for them, like their crate, your bed or wherever they feel safest.
- If you need to keep your outdoor pets outside, you might need to provide more nesting material, and make sure that their enclosures are totally secure from escape.
- In case of escape, microchip and keep the details up-to-date so that pets can be returned.
- If your pet is extremely distressed over fireworks, have a chat with your vet who may be able to provide assistance.
- Some dogs respond to noise desensitisation techniques. Play the noise of fireworks at a low level and reward calm behaviour. Increase the volume slowly over time and continue to reward non-reactive behaviour. This can take time and you will need to start well before firework season.
For horses and other stock:
- Check if there will be firework events nearby and move animals if possible.
- Ensure that the paddocks are free of hazards.
- Stay with horses if necessary.
- Speak to your vet if your animals need calming medication.
If you intent to set fireworks off or have a bonfire:
- Avoid setting them off near paddocks with animals in them.
- Let your neighbours know so that they can be prepared.
- Research alternative options such as low-noise or silent fireworks, particularly if you live near animals.
- Be fire safe – check on the FENZ website for tips.
