Mayoral statement: ex-Councillor struck off teachers roll

Media Release: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Mayor of Westland District Council says she respects the decision of the Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal to strike former Deputy Mayor Latham Martin off of the teachers’ roll for serious misconduct.

While the activities complained of did not occur while Mr Martin was acting in his former official council capacity, Mayor Helen Lash says she understands the concerns expressed to her about Mr Martin’s ongoing role in community groups and facilities.

“In light of the tribunal’s decision, we respect and support any decisions made around Latham’s future involvements on the community groups, boards and facilities he currently supports.

This is a very difficult situation for all parties, and I applaud the courage of the young people who presented their testimony to the tribunal.”

Mayor Lash says she does not intend to comment further on the issue but confirms that council will seek legal advice as to any obligations it might have regarding Mr Martin’s role in any committees or organisations that fall under council jurisdiction.
