There is an orange heavy rain warning issued for Westland 21hrs from 9:00am Monday to 6:00am Tuesday.
Due to the saturated ground conditions and strong onshore winds this week, there is potential for surface flooding. As a precautionary measure only, WDC will have contractors placing some palleted sandbags in the usual sites around Hokitika.
Pallets with sandbags will be located at the following intersections:
- Corner of Stafford and Sewell Streets
- Corner of Hamilton and Tancred Streets
- Corner of Tancred and Weld Streets
- Corner of Weld and Sewell Streets.
In the event of surface flooding, please only take what you need. We ask that drivers avoid these streets.
The systems ease off a bit in the middle of the work week, but the weekend isn’t going to be pleasant at this stage.
Westland District Council will be working with the Regional Council team & NZTA in regard to southern areas and river level impacts.
The sandbags may only be in place for a couple of days depending on updated rain projections.
